Një tërmet i fuqishëm ka goditur një zonë të gjerë në Turqinë juglindore, pranë kufirit me Sirinë, duke vrarë më shumë se 195 njerëz dhe duke bllokuar shumë të tjerë.

Shërbimi Gjeologjik i SHBA tha se tërmeti me magnitudë 7.8 goditi në orën 04:17 me orën lokale në një thellësi prej 17.9 km (11 milje) pranë qytetit të Gaziantep.

Në Turqi, zyrtarët konfirmuan më shumë se 76 vdekje deri më tani dhe 10 qytete u goditën, përfshirë Dijarbakirin.

Në Siri, më shumë se 50 njerëz u vranë, njoftuan mediat shtetërore.
Ekziston frika se numri i të vdekurve do të rritet ndjeshëm në orët në vijim.

Shumë ndërtesa janë shembur dhe ekipet e shpëtimit janë vendosur për të kërkuar të mbijetuarit nën grumbuj të mëdhenj rrënojash.

Ministri i Brendshëm turk, Suleymon Soylu tha se janë prekur 10 qytete: Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Dijarbakir dhe Kilis.

Në provincën Malatya, në veri-lindje të Gaziantep, të paktën 23 persona u vranë, thanë zyrtarët lokalë. Në Sanliurfa, në lindje, pati 17 vdekje. Dhe më shumë vdekje u raportuan në Dijarbakir dhe Osmaniye.
